I am not just an author, but also a book lover, and I’ve been known to foam at the mouth at the mention of book related functions. Which is why this is an event I look forward to all year.
Along with other authors, including my good friend, Teresa LaBella, I will be signing and selling books at the Clinton Book Festival. It is the third annual festival presented by the Clinton Public Library. This year it will be on Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clinton Community College. Authors will be signing purchased copies of their books. Book lovers and authors alike are invited to attend readings, workshops, demonstrations and other activities featuring local and regional writers, artists and organizations.
I’m super excited about this year’s Fest for a few reasons. One, I’ll be reading from Windy City Fire, the second book in the Windy City Cops Series. Two, this year I’ll be presenting a program titled “How Not To Write A Police Procedural“. Because of my former profession as a police officer, it’s a program I’ve done several times in the past. Police procedure is one of those murky subjects which authors are in the dark about.
The program came to be after I kept seeing the same errors about police procedure in books I was reading or in another author’s work I’d been asked to critique.
How Not To Write A Police Procedural will cover several areas of police work which seem to give authors difficulty. (Actually, this program would be enlightening to the average citizen, too. But, that’s fodder for another cannon) But…this program will be slightly different because I won’t be presenting alone. Co-presenting with me will be retired Chicago Police Sergeant, Jim Heneghan. Jim retired from the CPD in 2014 after 30 years as a beat sergeant. Prior to his promotion to sergeant, Jim was a detective. Both positions acquire all kinds of valuable knowledge and information. I know because I’ve tapped into Jim’s knowledge resources on many occasion!
This year’s program will be slightly different from its predecessor because I won’t be presenting alone. Retired Chicago Police Sergeant, Jim Heneghan has agreed to co-present with me.
